The Darcys

As for the (somewhat late) artist of the week, I’m choosing The Darcys. The Darcys are a fantastic Canadian shoegaze group who, in their latest album, re-imagined Steely Dan’s renowned Aja. While I have a soft spot for Aja (and Steely Dan in general) I found The Darcy’s cover to rival and perhaps surpass the original. Their cover of Deacon Blues is particularly excellent. You can pick up Aja and their equally great self-titled debut for free at their official site.

Chapterhouse “It Won’t Be Wrong” (Byrds cover / ripped from vinyl)

for all the unrequited love in the world

Every time I see you smile, come to me, don’t be long
Let me tell you how my heart goes wild.
Please let me love you and it won’t be wrong

Every time I’m in your arms, come to me , don’t be long
You know that I’ll never do you no harm
Please let me love you and it won’t be wrong

Let me love you and then you’ll see, come to me, come to me
Let me show you once and we’ll be free
Please let me love you and it won’t be wrong

WHO: Klaus & Kinski
WHAT: Single - El Rey Del Mambo
WHERE: Murcia, Spain

———————————

Taking their name from the German actor Klaus Kinski, who was notoriously known for his explosive temperament, this six-piece outfit is anything but. Instead, they offer an entrancing shoegaze/folk intertwined with classical Spanish guitar.

Accompanying their delicate sound is a much more sombre tone that sits heavily within their music. The band has a penchant for surrealism and bad dreams - a recurring theme in most of their songs.

Illustrating the journey into a ‘dark dream’, the video follows a puppet’s rise and fall, leading to its demise. The video was created through a tapestry of mediums via Thorstencoo Productions

Listen to more of Klaus & Kinski’s music on their MySpace page.

Azure Blue’s debut album, Rule of Thirds may be one of my favorite records at the current moment, due to its dream pop qualities that stand out from the barrage of singer songwriter/rock albums that have been released within the past few months. Azure Blue, alias for Tobias Isaksson, is not new to the music scene—with previous bands like Irene and Laurel Music he became famous within the blogsphere. However, this album is pure pop at its finest, without being overdramatic and sappy, the single “The Catcher in the Rye” is quite a lovely homage to novel that is so dearly loved. Isaksson says of the album, “Along with other male storytellers like Ernest Hemingway, Klas Ostergren, and Grant McLennan. I wanted to make a mature AOR record but ended up flirting with new wave and new romantics as well”. His description of his own record makes complete sense, there is a romantic sense to the whole album that doesn’t kill your sense of sanity (like those sappy Channing Tatum movies do). But what this record does most for me is the sense of being on a beach somewhere, reading a book and escaping life for a day (or 33.4 minutes). And that’s one of the most important aspects of an album for me, is the feeling of being able to escape whatever I’m doing and be projected into how the album makes me feel. For those who love the dreamy pop of Detroyer’s last album, Kaputt and love the wittiness of Jens Lekman’s lyrics, check out this album, and there will be no disappointment whatsoever.

Check out the album here.
